John MacArthur: Servant of the Word and Flock

Through more than forty years, John MacArthur has opened and taught the Word of God in one local congregation, Grace Community Church, Los Angeles. Consequences have followed which no one anticipated, and which the preacher attributes to the sovereign hand of God. A people united to Christ, and to their pastor, became a channel for blessing across the earth.

It has been a ministry marked by characteristics that re-appear in every spiritual advance – not concern for relevance not special attractions for young or old, male or female; but love for God and dependence on his Word and promises. MacArthur has proved, without ever intending to do so, that true preaching of the Word of God is international, because if you teach the Bible it transcends every border, every language, every culture.

It is as relevant today, and will be tomorrow, as in all the years since God put it down. That is why his sermons are heard or read in more than two hundred countries around the world today.

But this is also a human story, including the shaping of his youth, the strength of marriage and family, the refining influence of trials and controversies, and the building of a man whose staff have never known to be angry. There are friends who, for all their love of his ministry, say his life is his best sermon.

It includes twelve of MacArthur’s landmark sermons spanning from 1969-2009, a testimony to how biblical expository preaching of the living Word of God has the timeless power to transform lives. The Miracle of Christmas

John MacArthur’s The Miracle of Christmas goes to the heart of what Christmas is really about: ‘The birth of Jesus — Immanuel, God with us, the promised Messiah — who came to save His people from their sins.’ ‘It may be the biggest and most popular of all our holidays, but Christmas is in jeopardy just the same. A subtle but sure erosion is eating away the season’s true significance.’ MacArthur offers this book ‘as an antidote to two prevailing philosophies that are stealing Christmas’ -an effort to mythologize the Christmas story – and a tendency to secularize it — With reverence and a contagious sense of wonder, John MacArthur details every biblical fact known about the birth of Jesus, stressing that ‘Christmas should be a time of real joy and gladness, as opposed to the manufactured sentiment and wild revelry that characterize the way the world observes Christmas.’ The simple fact is: ‘That baby in the manger is God. That’s the heart and soul of the Christmas message.’

The Upper Room: Jesus’ Parting Promises for Troubled Hearts

In a borrowed or rented banqueting room atop some shop or large family dwelling in Jerusalem, the drama unfolded. The events and teaching recorded in John 13-16, commonly known as the Upper Room Discourse, reveal some of the most poignant and powerful promises for believers in all of Scripture.

Jesus and His disciples were standing on the precipice of the darkest night in the history of the world. The Lord of glory was about to be betrayed and murdered. The disciples would be scattered, and the boldest of them would deny even knowing Him.

The Lord knew full well that He Himself would soon undergo an unimaginable deluge of woe. He would be spit on and mocked by evil men. He would bear the sins of the world. He would be cursed with the wrath of God for others’ sins. He would feel as if His Father had utterly abandoned Him. Any other man in that situation would have been in such a state of uncontrollable agitation that He would never have been able to focus His attention on the needs of others―but Jesus was different. He wanted His followers to know the peace of the One who has overcome the world.

During those final hours before Jesus’ betrayal, He gave His disciples―and consequently, all believers throughout history―His parting promises, His last will and testament. It is the inheritance of every believer in Christ.

In The Upper Room, pastor John MacArthur takes us back to that night and the glorious hope we have in Christ. This is vintage MacArthur―an exposition of the text that resonates with devotion to the Lord and love for God’s people, calling us to know and love the One who loved us to the end.
